Income inequality in America is growing to alarming levels; levels of inequality not seen in the United States since the 1920s, an era romanticized for its jazz and extravagance, the so-called Roaring ’20s, where old and new money made fortunes on the pre-SEC stock market and in an environment of negligible income taxes, anti-labor sentiment, and rural crisis, which pushed more and more poor Americans from agrarian life into the cities. Income inequality reached its peak in 1928, when the top-1%’s share of income accounted for 23.9% of all national income, according to the Economic Policy Institute,

The US has now reached that same level of income inequality. From 1928 to 1973, income inequality fell as middle- and lower-class households experienced faster income growth than the top-1%. But, beginning with the economic disruptions of the 1973–1975 recession, the 1973 and 1979 oil shocks, and the double-dip recession of 1980 to early 1983, income inequality has increased year after year. The financial crash and Great Recession of the late 2000s briefly halted the growth, but since then, the upward march of income inequality has resumed.

A useful metric for gauging income inequality is the Gini index. The Gini index, or Gini coefficient, is a measure of income inequality, ranging from 0 to 1, with 0 representing perfect equality of incomes, and 1 representing maximal inequality of incomes. According to the Census Bureau’s 2020 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates (the latest data available), the Gini index for the United States is 0.4817, down from 0.4823 in 2019 and 0.4822 in 2018. According to the same source, the median household income in the US is $64,994. In order to identify the cities with the greatest income inequality, the study was limited to cities with populations of 50,000 or more.
