Trauma may seem like a strange start to comedy, but then, as Lenny Bruce once said, “All my humor is based on doom and gloom.” The women behind sex, dating and relationships podcast Girls Gotta Eat are no strangers to this truth. When Ashley Heseltine found herself in a relationship that she badly wanted to work out, but roadblocks kept coming along the way, she took a deep dive into the psychology of relationships. That knowledge became the foundation of Girls Gotta Eat, which he started in 2018 with Rayna Greenberg, who experienced romantic trauma of his own, including a broken engagement. Now, the podcast gets 2.5 million downloads a month, is a top 20 podcast on iTunes and Spotify, and after 50 live shows last year, Girls Gotta Eat is going on tour in Australia.

It’s easy to write off entertainment successes as stories of pure talent, but Hesseltine isn’t as starry about it: “We treated podcasts like a business from day one,” she says. Being an entrepreneur has always been a goal for her, noting that, “I’ve had “problems with authority” quote-un-quote all my life. Greenberg agrees that building her brand from scratch The greatest gift of creation is the freedom that comes with it. “I am in control of my life and all success and failure are mine.”
