With kids spending more time online, and excessive screen time leading to less contact with family and friends, disrupted sleep and reduced physical activity, the need to provide a balanced education has never been more important at Repton School.

Set in rural South Derbyshire, Repton School and its Repton Prep provide young minds with endless opportunities for enrichment and physical as well as mental well-being. The classrooms are within walking distance of the sports fields, and the forest and lake on the grounds of the preparatory school allow students to enjoy the joys of children’s play along with formal education. In 2022, Repton received the UK’s Happiest Boarding School award from independent reviewers Muddy Stilettos, who described Repton as having a “deserved reputation for sporting excellence, stunning amenities and a refreshing lack of pretension”.

The sprawling Repton campus houses the original 16th-century school buildings, as well as a state-of-the-art science monastery, art galleries, and a 320-seat theater and sports center. But Mark Semmens, Principal of Repton School, has no doubt that outstanding teachers and coaches outperform world-class facilities every time. “Our vast countryside in the heart of England allows us to provide unlimited education in a healthy environment,” he says. “It shows up in life experiences as well as the accomplishments of our students.”

Creating a balanced education allows young people to develop the self-confidence and skills they need for life after school. Mr. Semmens continues: “We work best when everything is intertwined – our excellence in sports drives academic excellence, our industry-leading pastoral care supports excellence in all areas of school life, our forms of art, drama and music are rounded, culturally aware. young people ready to become citizens of the world. Repton’s rural setting allows us to provide a sense of balance throughout, not least because every teacher lives in the countryside, so students are not constrained by schedules – creativity, learning and sports can and do happen at any time.”

The community plays a big role in the life of Repton. An important part of the philosophy of the school is that breakfast, lunch and tea are accepted at the boarding house along with staff and visitors. This means that before students deal with the big problems of life, they will deal with the smaller ones – learning the art of speaking, passing water, cutting bread and smiling back. A successful boarding school community creates a sense of belonging that lasts far beyond days spent at school. It brings together an artist, an actor, a mathematician, an athlete, a scientist and an entertainer in a unique community where they are inspired by each other.

Moreover, students learn that humanity is made up of a rich array of personality types – extroverts and introverts, analysts and creatives, leaders and educators. Every day, Reptonians are encouraged to think big—to be ambitious and limitless. Alumni go on to achieve great things in their professional and personal lives, from industrial success to demonstrating an outstanding entrepreneurial spirit; from big philanthropic efforts to becoming philanthropists who change lives around the world.

Serena Cole, a third-year medical student at Cambridge, was named the first black woman president of the Trinity College Student Union. During her time at Repton, in addition to notable academic achievements, including six A’s at Level A, Serena was awarded an Arkwright Scholarship in Engineering, a 7th grade in piano and baritone horn, and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award. Flying Sergeant for RAF Cadets, played goal for the 1st Hockey Team. Her advice to others? “Always make time for what you enjoy. The more extracurricular activities I attend, the more free time I have during the day. It’s counterintuitive, but I find it works for things I like or care about. This also applies to relaxing and spending time with friends and family, which is incredibly important for my mental health and self-care.”

Repton recognizes that in the future, collaboration, creativity and teamwork will be more important than ever. This requires not one type of people, but a team of different personalities. Education Repton produces young people who are healthy in many ways to be ready for this challenge, having experienced a truly diverse and balanced educational offering during their formative years.
