“We expect there will be teams that will continue to work mostly remotely, others that will do some combination work remotely and in the office, and still others that decide clients will have to work mostly in the office on the team. The best service will be given to you,” said Mr. Jassi. He said that the number of days employees work from office or which days they do so will be decided by the directors, along with their teams and senior leaders.

Amazon said just two months ago that it was delaying its corporate employees returning to the office until at least January 3, 2022, and before that employees should try to be in the office at least three days a week . It was earlier targeting a return in early September.

Mr. Jassi said that on Monday the company will give the option to corporate employees to work remotely for four weeks in a year from anywhere in the country in which they are employed. But he said he wants most corporate employees to be close enough to their core teams that they can reach office within a day’s notice.

Amazon was one of several companies that have pushed back plans to return to the office, as the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic seemed to buck the earlier trajectory. Employers are grappling with how to balance some employees’ desire to work from home with their desire to bring their employees back to offices.

According to its annual filing, Amazon had about 1.3 million employees as of the end of last year. Monday’s announcement does not apply to the company’s warehouse and other employees.
