A popular device used to find lost items such as keys, wallet., or bag, used by some Americans to keep track of their loved ones with dementia, the report says.

“Carers have turned to Apple’s tiny $29 tracking devices after finding other methods of monitoring people with dementia were inappropriate or too expensive. Many tracking apps require people to have their phones with them. People with dementia may forget about them when they leave the house, caregivers say. However, they tend to remember the keys and wallets that AirTags were designed for.” Wall Street Magazine reports.

Public health officials, however, say tracking people with dementia is ethically questionable because some people don’t want to be tracked.

Some people who use AirTags say they lack the accuracy to be useful in dire situations.

In 2022, about 6.5 million Americans aged 65 and over are estimated to be living with Alzheimer’s dementia. Alzheimer’s Association.
