I am a firm believer in rituals and incorporate them in my life to give us happiness and give us emotional and spiritual balance. Even more so, I advocate setting up your own, personal rituals. As Abigail Benner, MD, writes in Psychology Today, “Self-created ceremonies give meaning and order to our personal lives.”
One of the things I love the most about the Christmas season is being involved in the many rituals that I have created for myself – rituals like visiting the lobbies of hotels and office buildings, those places with beautifully decorated Christmas trees. to see; binge-watching holiday movies and TV shows; Treating yourself to a live ballet performance of The Nutcracker; buying a new holiday-themed piece of clothing; and attending church services on Christmas Eve. These rituals help connect me to Christmas, and they bring me joy. They add to the excitement and joy of Christmas that I experienced as a child, and they really make this season pleasant and bright for me. Unfortunately, this year I will not be able to participate or enjoy many of my rituals due to the safety protocols of staying home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is the Christmas rituals at home that I cherish more than ever during this COVID-19 pandemic. Not being able to safely gather with friends and family, nor melt into hordes of holiday shoppers and experience the hustle and bustle of the season is something I’m missing. I also miss not being a part of Christmas church services and music. So, it is the rituals at my home that are bringing me joy, splendor and festivity with the Christmas season.
This year I’ve created a new Christmas ritual at home: drinking hot chocolate and eating holiday cookies while watching Christmas movies and TV shows. That’s right, one cookie per movie and show so I don’t pack on unwanted weight. I’ll start this Christmas week. In preparation I added my favorite holiday sandwich cookies — dark chocolate cookies with peppermint candy vanilla cream in the middle — to my grocery list last week. I’m all set by New Year’s Day, and I can’t wait to start my entertainment marathon! Oh, I also added Peppermint-White Chocolate Flavored Popcorn to the list. Being confined to home due to COVID-19 is making this new ritual even more welcoming.
