Apple hasn’t said publicly that it opposes recent union drives in many retail stores across the US, but did show a message to employees that it is discouraging employees from entering into collective bargaining agreements.

According to the audio, O’Brien said, “I want to start by saying that it is your right to join the union, but it is also your right not to join the union.” published by vice, “If you’re faced with that decision, I want to encourage you to consult a wide range of people and sources to understand how to work at Apple under a collective bargaining agreement.”

In remarks, O’Brien says he believes Apple is responsive to employees’ concerns and that a union would make it harder for corporate executives to address issues raised by workers.

Apple is facing at least three union drives in its more than 270 US stores. A store at the Cumberland Mall in Atlanta will vote to unionize with Communications Workers of America on June 2. Another store in Towson, MD will vote to be held with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers later in June. Employees of a third store in New York City are currently collecting signatures to officially show interest in the event.

Union organizers have said they want a voice on workplace issues such as in-store COVID safety regulations as well as higher wages to keep up with the rising cost of living. Organizers have asked for at least $30 an hour at the Grand Central Terminal location in New York.

Apple retail workers are holding the event amid a significant revival of union interest in the US, backed by President Biden.

More than 50 Starbucks stores nationwide have unionized. An Amazon warehouse in Staten Island, New York, unionized earlier this year. No US Apple Store has yet been unionized, although there are collective bargaining agreements with retail employees in other countries.

An Apple representative declined to comment. The company has previously said that it offers strong compensation and benefits to retail workers, including minimum wages exceeding $20 an hour.
