Apple on Wednesday announced a new self-service repair program that will let customers buy parts to fix their iPhone or Mac. The program will first allow iPhone owners to replace their screen, battery or camera, and more parts will come later.

The move appears to be a major victory for advocates of “rights to repair” and is almost a face-off for Apple. Repair shops and lobbyists who support repair reform have called on lawmakers to enact a variety of regulations that would allow increased access to manuals and official parts. But Apple has lobbied against allowing customers to fix its products for years, citing safety or performance issues, particularly from third-party parts. It also sells a subscription AppleCare+ service for its products that offers consumers repairs at a lower cost than non-customers.

The service will be available in the US for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. Later, the company will sell parts so that consumers can fix their Macs that run on the Apple M1 chip.

Customers can purchase parts through Apple’s Self-Service Repair online store and the order will include a repair manual. Users who return their used parts for later recycling can receive credit for their purchases.

The Biden administration and the Federal Trade Commission have signaled a focus on the right to repair, which may have forced Apple to act down this road. in that Executive Order on Competition, the president directed the FTC to consider rules preventing “unreasonable competitive restrictions on third-party repair or self-repair of items.” FTC unanimously in July voted To expedite repair ban enforcement.

“Self Service Repair is aimed at individual technicians with knowledge and experience in repairing electronic equipment,” the company said in a release. “For most customers, going to a professional repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get repairs.”

Apple also has an “Independent Repair Program,” which allows repair shops to enter into a certification process and contract with Apple to gain access to authentic Apple tools and manuals. But many products remained challenging to repair at home or without contact with Apple.

Apple has not yet revealed how much its parts will cost.
