“Inspired by explorers and athletes around the world, we’ve created an entirely new category of Apple Watch designed for new and extreme environments—the toughest and most capable Apple Watch ever,” Apple COO Jeff Williams said in a statement.

Apple Watch Ultra running on watchOS 9 will be more durable with a larger 49mm titanium case and sapphire crystal display. According to Apple’s release, it will offer up to 36 hours of battery life in normal use, with the option to extend that to 60 hours with a new low power setting.

According to the tech giant, its display will be twice as bright as any other Apple Watch display. It features three built-in microphones to greatly reduce background noise and improve sound quality in a variety of environments.

The Apple Watch Ultra also introduces a new, bright orange Action button that gives you quick access to features designed for diving, running, hiking, and other sports activities.

For example, it can “immediately start workouts and move users to the next individual workout interval or the next multisport workout step,” Apple said in a post. It can also be used to mark a place or point of interest while walking outdoors.

The new smartwatch “delivers the most accurate GPS of any Apple Watch to date, giving users the most accurate distance, pace and route data for training and competition,” the tech giant added.

Additional watch features include 100-meter water resistance, recreational diving up to 40 meters, depth gauge with water temperature sensor, and an 86 decibel siren to call attention during emergencies.

Along with the new smartwatch, Apple has introduced three new band options designed specifically for explorers and athletes: Trail Loop, Alpine Loop, and Ocean Band.

Other products Apple announced at Wednesday’s event include the iPhone 14, Apple Watch Series 8, and the second generation AirPods Pro.
