As Lidl GB increases staff wages, this is what rival supermarkets are paying

IDL has said it will become the highest paying supermarket in the UK, as it has set pay increases to recognize the hard work of employees and attract new employees.

Lidl GB said the entry level salary would be £11.30 an hour from £10.85 within the M25, and £10.10 to £9.50 outside the capital. Which will be effective from March 2022.

Discounter, which launched its Christmas advertising campaign this month, said the move would benefit more than 21,000 employees (who work in Lidl’s stores or regional distribution centers).

The company wants to increase the UK store count to 1000 by the end of 2023. It now has about 860 branches, of which over 100 are in London.

Christian Hartnagel, Chief Executive of Lidl GB, said: “At Lidl, our frontline partners are the backbone of our business. They have worked tirelessly over the past 18 months of the COVID-19 crisis and are integral to our future success.

“We have ambitious plans to grow our business in Great Britain, and to do so we need to ensure that we attract and care for the best talent at every level of our business.”

The update comes at a time when many grocers are vying to secure the festive workers.

Store assistants currently start at £9.55 nationwide, but can go up to £10.57 after three years, and £11.07 in London which can rise to £11.32 after two years.


The chain's minimum hourly rates are £9.36 or £9.95, depending on the location of the store, while London-based employees earn £10.51 per hour.

Marks & Spencer

The minimum wage for all permanent workers in the UK is £9.50 per hour. This rises to £10.75 for a team working in Greater London and £10.95 for Central London.


The business said it offers a salary of at least £10 an hour for store employees.


The hourly rate for employees at Sansbury's and Argos is £9.50. Workers in Zones 1 and 2 in central London pay £10.10.


Store and customer fulfillment center employees paid hourly get £9.55 per hour.
