On Sunday evening in Waukesha, Wisconsin, a speeding SUV broke several barricades and at least five people were killed and forty injured after being plowed into a Christmas parade, in a horrific incident in which the city’s livestreamed parade and by phone was captured. Death toll confirmed by Waukesha Police Department on Facebook Post who noted that the numbers may change as additional information is gathered.

In a press conference earlier Sunday night, Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson said a person of interest had been taken into custody with the speeding vehicle that caused the tragedy.

Thompson also said that a police officer at the scene dropped his weapon in an attempt to stop the speeding vehicle, however, no one was injured in the firing.

City fire chief Steven Howard said 11 adults and 12 children were injured and taken to a nearby hospital by his department.

A spokesman for the Diocese of Milwaukee announced that a Catholic priest, several parishioners and students at Waukesha Catholic School were among the wounded.
