Los Gatos, Calif.-based Atomera develops methods for manufacturing chips and licenses its technology to chip designers and manufacturers. Its approach involves inserting a layer of oxygen atoms into the semiconductor material to help make the chips smaller and more power efficient.

The technology announced Tuesday is designed for 5-volt power management chips. Those chips sit between a power source such as a battery or electrical outlet and translate the power supplied by the source into the power required by the device’s computing chips.

Atomera said its new technology could shrink the size of transistors in power management chips so that semiconductor makers could have 20% more chips than their existing technologies and devices.

Atomera CEO Scott Bibaud told Businesshala in an interview that it would take about two years for chip makers to decide whether to tap the technology to redesign their chips to implement it.

“At the scale of semiconductors, it’s very fast,” Bibaud said, adding that “power management chips are really the fastest chips to design.”
