methodology

Using data from our travel insurance partner CYTI, we assessed policies on the following:

  • Cover for risks related to COVID-19: We have seen whether the policies offer any kind of cancellation cover other than medical and deductible cover to cover the risks related to COVID.
  • Cancellation cover: We looked at the cancellation cover provided to identify the most generous limits.
  • Cancellation Extra: The less extra, the more we evaluated the policy. No-additional policies scored best. An additional amount is the amount deducted from any successful claim.
  • cut cover: Here we favored policies that provide a higher level of cover to those who need to reduce their leave.
  • Medical cover: The policies that performed best were those with higher levels of pay for medical costs.
  • Medical Extras: Again, we favor policies with low or zero additional fees.
  • Hospital Benefits: Policies scored highly if they offered a higher level of this cover than other contracts.

To arrive at our top-5 ranking, we combined the scores of each company, giving added importance to policies that provide cancellation cover, as well as medical and deductible cover for risks related to COVID-19.

Holidays 2021: What you should do

Buy insurance when you book

One of the most important features of travel insurance is the cancellation cover. Getting insurance right away means cancellation protection is in place from the get-go.

There are many reasons you might need to cancel your trip, regardless of COVID-19, including illness, bereavement, divorce and redundancy. But issues related to the pandemic make it even more important to create a policy that covers COVID-19 risks, as to why pay if you need to cancel.

Before buying your insurance, check that it offers cover for the destination you have in mind, and also see what it says about possible changes in cover if the COVID status of the destination changes prior to your travel.

follow government advice

Your travel insurance will not be valid if you travel against the official guidelines. it is important to check official website For the latest information.

If your vacation or flight is canceled by your tour operator or airline, you should be offered a refund or alternative arrangement. If you are able to get your money back in any other way then your policy will not pay off.

What about requirements at your destination – and back to the UK?

It is likely that some destinations may require visitors to be vaccinated or proof of a recent negative test – or may be tested upon arrival.

If you fall ill abroad, you should be covered by the medical expenses section of your insurance. Should you have to delay returning to the UK because you are ill or because you need to quarantine while you are away, your policy may cover your out-of-pocket expenses. Check your policy for details.

Keep in mind that, depending on where you came from and the restrictions in force at the time, you may need to take a COVID-19 test or even enter quarantine upon your return to the UK. This can be at your home or in a government-approved quarantine hotel. (More on this below under ‘What is a traffic light system?’)

You will be responsible for the cost of testing and your accommodation, if applicable, so it is important to include these in your calculations – especially if you are traveling with your family or in another group.

Check if your travel insurance policy includes COVID-19 cover

Most insurance policies now include cover for risks associated with COVID-19, should you need medical treatment for the virus or need to curtail your leave due to a COVID-19 related issue.

Many also include cover that allows you to claim a cancellation if the virus prevents you from taking leave.

The specific circumstances for which you can make a claim vary between travel insurers. Check the policy details carefully before buying to avoid any chances of misunderstanding. If necessary, contact the provider directly.

What is a traffic light system?

International travel for leisure purposes has been permitted with effect from 17 May 2021 with the so-called ‘traffic light’ system, which will be ‘red’, ‘amber’ or ‘green’ by the UK government to countries/territories based on their perceived COVID classified as. -19 risk. The list is reviewed every three weeks, with countries moving from one category to another, changing their status during that period.

Travelers need to meet specific requirements depending on the category of their vacation destination and their vaccination status:

All passengers returning to the UK from green-listed destinations, as well as fully NHS-vaccinated passengers returning from destinations on the amber list, must:

  • Take a test at their vacation destination within 72 hours of their return flight
  • Take a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test a day or two before their return to the UK.

No group will be required to quarantine upon return to the UK, unless a positive result is produced by one of these tests.

Travelers who have not been fully NHS vaccinated and are returning from an Amber-listed country:

  • Take a test at their vacation destination within 72 hours of their return flight
  • Quarantine at home or elsewhere for a period of 10 days upon return to the UK
  • Get PCR test done on the second day of return and on the eighth day.

Passengers also have the option test to release To end self-isolation early on the fifth day.

Travelers returning to the UK from red-listed countries will have to adhere to strict restrictions, including:

  • Taking a test at your vacation destination within 72 hours of your return flight
  • live in a managed quarantine hotel for 10 days upon return to the UK
  • Took PCR test on the second and eighth day of his arrival.
