Note that the ‘extra’ you see on the entries below is the amount that will be deducted from any claim payments you receive. Policies charge additional fees to prevent small-value claims, which would be costly to administer, and help keep premiums low.

methodology

Using data from our mobile partner, Comparison Creator, we researched policies with accidental damage, loss and theft cover for a range of iPhone devices.

We also considered the extra amount you’d pay to make a claim, the extent of worldwide cover, and what most older iPhones are covered by each insurer.

What is iPhone Insurance?

iPhone insurance protects your handset from accidental damage, theft or loss – meaning you won’t have to pay for a replacement if your iPhone is lost, stolen or broken. Given the prices of the latest iPhones, iPhone insurance can give you peace of mind that if something goes wrong, you won’t be left out of pocket.

The more valuable your iPhone, the higher your monthly premium. For example, the iPhone 8 will be cheaper to insure than the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

What will iPhone insurance cover and what won’t?

Cover will vary from insurer to insurer, but you can protect your iPhone from: accidental damage, liquid damage, theft, loss, and mechanical failure.

Insurers expect you to take proper care of your phone so that the chances of your phone being stolen or broken are not high. For example, an insurer may deny a theft claim if you left your iPhone unattended at the gym and it was stolen.

Doesn’t your home insurance cover your iPhone?

It can happen, but it’s best not to assume. You’ll need a home contents insurance policy with accidental damage and personal property cover to match the coverage provided by many standalone mobile phone insurers.

If you had a 1TB iPhone 13 Max, it could be that the value of your phone exceeds your home insurance policy’s single-item claims limit, and doesn’t provide enough protection.

Claiming for your phone can also result in loss of your no claim bonus and increase your premium when you come for renewal.

frequently Asked question

Can I insure a second hand iPhone?

Some insurers won’t cover iPhones older than four months, so you’ll need to check the small print with each. Some insurers will cover older iPhones if they are refurbished.

Does iPhone insurance cover me overseas?

Yes, in our research we found that the minimum overseas cover was 45 days, while some insurers offer a year-long cover when you are abroad.

Do I Need iPhone Insurance If My Phone Is Under Warranty?

The warranties that come with new iPhones only cover mechanical malfunctions, which means you’re not protected against theft, loss, or accidental damage—so an insurance policy is still more than worthwhile.

How does AppleCare compare to iPhone insurance?

AppleCare+ offers cover for up to two years and includes two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months. The additional cost is £25 for screen damage or £79 for anything else.

AppleCare+ will cover your device, battery, earphones and other accessories, and you can also benefit from the ‘Express Replacement Service’, which will send a replacement phone before you return your existing handset.

Prices may be more expensive than many of the insurance companies on our list, but you’ll get specialist cover from the manufacturer itself.
