Biden said the two countries need to set up some “common sense railings” to ensure that “intense competition” between the two countries does not lead to unintended conflict.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping congratulated Biden as his “old friend”, as well as speaking in a friendly tone, saying the two countries should work together.

Biden also said that the two leaders “spent a lot of time talking to each other” when he was vice president and that Xi was a rising force in the Chinese Communist Party.

At the meeting, Biden was joined by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and a group of aides in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, while Xi was joined by the Communist Party director, Ding Xuexiang, and other aides.
