President Joe Biden on Tuesday ordered the release of oil stored in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the White House announced, as the president intensified efforts to reduce rising gasoline prices across the United States.
Biden made this announcement jointly with several other countries including India, Japan, UK, China and South Korea.
The White House said that over time the US release would total 50 million barrels.
Gas prices have become a significant issue for Biden and his administration as the holidays draw closer—the average price for a gallon of gas in the US is now $3.41 a gallon. AAA, which is 60% more than the previous year.
