The traditional Chinese red lantern-shaped, three-story pavilion is intended to attract the millions of visitors expected at the first World’s Fair to be held in the Middle East.

Built on a site covering approximately 4,600 square metres, the ‘Light of China’ offers a glimpse into the future: space exploration, robotics and smart cities, and is a source of pride for some of the earliest Chinese visitors.

“You can see that we are now experiencing rapid scientific development,” said Shao Xiong, a Chinese national visiting the pavilion.

Dubai, the Middle East’s tourism, trade and trade hub, is hoping to boost its economy by attracting 25 million visits to the World’s Fair, which was delayed by the pandemic for a year.

Expo 2020 Dubai opened last Thursday with a grand celebration of fireworks, music and messages about the power of global collaboration for a more sustainable future.

China, whose pavilion is just a few miles away from the United States and just around the corner, is keen to highlight its credentials.

“The theme of the China Pavilion is building a community with a shared future for mankind, innovation and opportunity,” said Feng Ke, deputy director of the Chinese Pavilion.
