Cruise Ships Are Installing Touchless Elevator Buttons To Combat Covid-19, But Not Everyone Is Affected

“All fun and games until some 5-year-old shakes his hand in front of the whole thing and you stop on all 18 floors,” shouted another.

A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean said the buttons are a relatively new feature that the company offers on at least some ships. They are not mandated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or even necessarily related to the pandemic, but are rather an “innovation” aimed at improving the guest experience.

More improvement is needed. According to the CDC’s website, 100 cruise ships currently in water or planning to operate in US waters as of Thursday were among those cruise ships carrying passengers that had reported cases of COVID-19. 100% included. Last week the CDC recommended avoiding cruise travel regardless of vaccination status. Some cruise lines are now canceling select trips as the Omicron case escalates.

With those odds, it’s hard to imagine any sort of elevator innovation actually getting the ship right. But, hey, there are always stairs.
