“I have informed my leadership team as well as the president about my positive test result,” Austin said. “My staff has started contact tracing and testing of all the people with whom I have come in contact in the last one week.”

Austin, 68, said he was fully vaccinated and received a booster in October.

“Vaccines work and will continue to be a military medical necessity for our workforce. I continue to encourage everyone deserving of a booster shot to get one. It remains a readiness issue,” he said.

In October, another member of President Joe Biden’s cabinet, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Meyerkas, tested positive for COVID-19.
