American, Frontier and Alaska are the only airlines listed in the latest DOT report.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) has launched a dashboard to show which airlines don’t charge extra for families who want to sit next to each other.
It is called Airline Family Seat Control Paneland it lists airlines that guarantee adjacent seats for children under 14 and an accompanying adult at no extra charge for all fare types, and which carriers do not.
“A parent buying tickets for a family must obtain a guarantee from the airline that they will seat the parent and child together without fees, without a last-minute fight at the boarding gate or having to ask other passengers to give up their seat to allow the parent and child to sit together. ,” the DOT website says.
BIDEN AND BUTTIGIG CALL AIRLINES TO REDUCE FAMILY SEAT FEE
In February, DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg first announced a plan to launch such a dashboard. At the same time, he also tweeted that the department is “starting to require airlines to guarantee free accommodation for families.”
However, last July the department issued a notice saying that carriers must “do everything in their power” to keep children close to the adults in their group at no additional charge.
Several airlines have already updated their rules in the weeks leading up to the release of the dashboard.
Last week, President Joe Biden and Buttigieg praised American Airlines for updating its customer service plan so that children under 15 years of age can sit next to an accompanying adult at no additional charge, including Basic Economy fares, subject to certain conditions.
FAA TO FORM SAFETY REVIEW GROUP AFTER STATEMENTS
Buttigieg also noted in the answer thread that Frontier Airlines made a similar adjustment.
However, DOT noted that the policy, which was recently put in place, is “subject to limited conditions.”
Some of these conditions include that the child and accompanying adult must be booked in the same booking, adjacent seats must be available at the time of booking, and the adult either selects seats for the entire booking or skips seats for the entire booking and does not make changes to the assignments. places after their appointment.

The department says it will continue to update the dashboard “to provide air passengers with clear airline information.”
“DOT is not satisfied with airlines’ claims that they will ‘make efforts’ to ensure that families traveling with children are accommodated together at no additional cost,” the DOT website says. “The Department is calling on all airlines to guarantee accommodation for families.”
Here are the airlines that guarantee free accommodation for families:
- american airlines
- Frontier Airlines
- Alaska Airlines
United Airlines also announced in February that it changed his policywhich goes into effect this month to allow families to sit together more easily and free of charge.
Ticker | Safety | Last | Change | Change % |
---|---|---|---|---|
AAL | AMERICAN AIRLINES GROUP INC. | 16.36 | +0.24 | +1.49% |
ULCC | FRONTIER GROUP HOLDINGS | 11.77 | +0.30 | +2.62% |
ALC | ALASKA AIR GROUP INC. | 48.51 | +0.60 | +1.25% |
UAL | UNITED AIRLINES HOLDINGS INC. | 54.01 | +1.57 | +2.99% |
The airline has created a new seat map feature to allow children under 12 years of age to be seated next to adults for free.
However, United is not listed among the airlines that guarantee free seats for families because its policy is not 100% in line with what DOT asks for on its dashboard.
