The deal pushes for large-scale commercialization of so-called robotaxis in China in an industry that has become increasingly competitive.

WeRide manufactures autonomous driving systems but does not manufacture cars. Instead, it wants to partner with automakers — in this case GAC. Ontime is a ride-hailing app partially owned by GAC. The three companies will bring autonomous taxis on the platform, which can be availed by the users through the app.

The companies plan to offer the test ride to the public at the Guangzhou Auto Show on Friday. The companies said the Robotaxi service would be available to the wider public by 2022.

WeRide, which is backed by automaker Nissan and valued at more than $3 billion, has been testing an autonomous taxi service since 2019 in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, where it is headquartered.

The company is facing intense competition from other upstarts including Pony.ai and AutoX as well as giants like Baidu.

Baidu CEO Robin Li said on Wednesday that the company plans to launch its own robotic taxi service in 100 cities by 2030.
