Some Democrats are pushing billionaires to pay taxes when the price of the shares they own goes up, even if they don’t sell any shares. It’s a concept called “unrealized profits,” and Musk is sitting on a lot of them, with a net worth of nearly $300 billion.

“Having a tax evasion instrument has made a lot of unrealized gains lately, so I propose to sell 10% of my Tesla stock,” he tweeted Saturday afternoon. “Do you support it?”

At 5:40 p.m. Eastern Time, a little more than two hours after Musk’s initial tweet, 54% of the total of 876,189 votes said yes.

Most of Musk’s wealth is in Tesla shares, which does not pay him a cash salary. “I only own stock, so the only way for me personally to pay taxes is to sell stock,” he tweeted.

Musk, who is known for his sometimes flippant tweets, said he would “follow the results of this poll.”
