Engie SA needs clarity from the European Union on the framework around potential payments in rubles for Russian gas, Chief Executive Officer Catherine MacGregor said at a press conference held on Thursday.

The French utility is looking into ways of making payments in rubles while complying with sanctions against Russia, according to the CEO. The situation needs to be “quickly resolved” as payment deadlines are approaching, starting at the end of May, she said. If a solution is not found, deliveries of Russian gas could be halted, Ms. MacGregor said.

In March, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia would only accept payments in rubles for gas deliveries from nations considered hostile. Some European states opposed the demand, saying it represented a breach of contractual obligations.
