From Gordon Gekko in “Wall Street” to Miranda Priestley in “The Devil Wears Prada,” the story of a bad boss makes a good movie. However, it’s not so much fun when you’re working for one. A terrible boss can make your work day feel like hell and affect your effectiveness and self-esteem.

Dealing with a bad boss isn’t about achieving parity, but being knowledgeable about how you manage it. Here are five important tips to consider.

Understand what is driving their behavior
There is a difference between a boss who is a good person but is in a stressful situation and not coping very well, and a boss who thrives on power and is a narcissist or bully.

The first step is to understand what is driving their behavior and determine whether it is consistent or out of character.

If their behavior has changed, be interested in what might be causing it. For example, your boss may have an increased workload and stress level due to the increased demands of your boss or client. If so, being proactive and supportive is a great way to build a better relationship. Find out how you can help them. In return, your boss will see you as a helpful and reliable person.

Conversely, if your boss is a narcissist and consistently displays poor leadership behavior, you are unlikely to change them. Instead, think about the benefits you get from the job in relation to experience, connections, and other elements. Next, determine if it’s worth sticking to it for a while.

Reflecting on my career, at times I worked for people who were hard to work for, but the experience and benefits gained in the role made it worthwhile. However, setting a deadline is important because prolonged exposure to an unhealthy working environment is not good for your confidence and well-being.

Build your support team
You want to have people around you – both inside and outside the organization – who will support and support you. Your support crew will help prepare you for your next job and ensure that you maintain a healthy and strong sense of self. Dealing with a bad boss isn’t something one looks forward to, but unfortunately, at times, it’s an inevitable part of the working world.
