One of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo’s final self-portraits broke multiple art market records on Tuesday when it sold for $34.9 million, the highest price ever realized for artwork by a Latin American artist at auction .

Auction house Sotheby’s said it is one of the signature paintings Kahlo painted of herself throughout her career, and was completed in 1949 when Rivera had an affair with Mexican film actress María Felix, a friend of Kahlo’s.
The final price tag of $34.9 million makes “Diego y Yo” the most expensive work ever sold by a Latin American artist ever sold at auction, beating the previous record holder Rivera, whose painting “The Rivals” was nearly sold. $10 million in 2018.
Kahlo’s self-portrait is the second most expensive work by a female artist after an American painter Georgia O’Keefeof “Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1”, which earned $44.4 million in 2014.
“Diego y yo” also marks a new artist record, with the final price being four more than the most expensive painting by Kahlo previously, “Dos Desnudos en el Bosque (La Tierra Misma)” which was sold $8 million in 2016.
The last time “Diego Yo Yo” was auctioned was in 1990, it sold for $1.4 million at a historic auction that made Kahlo the first Latin American artist to sell a work for seven figures, according to Sotheby’s.
