Great Panther Mining Ltd said on Thursday it would file a defense against three notices of infringement and appeal fines imposed by Brazil’s environmental regulator.
The Amapá state environment agency said a fish-death incident was caused by a leak in a reclaimed water pipe at a mine site of Brazilian subsidiary Mina Tucano Ltd., the precious metals maker said.
The agency issued notices and imposed fines totaling 50 million Brazilian reals, the equivalent of approximately $8.8 million, which the company intends to appeal in its defense statements.
Great Panther said the subsidiary is investigating the incident.
Great Panther said, “Based on its preliminary investigation, including an independent report on fish toxicology and water quality obtained by Mina Tucano on December 28, 2021, the company has prepared a formal defense against the position taken by the agency. “
