The term work-life balance gets me used to thinking of one of those old-timey brass bankers’ scales—one where if you put something on one side, it leans like that, and then you get the other. Something needs to be added to the side to make it balance again.

This is the worst view of work-life balance possible. I would know. I am the Work-Life Balance Coach for Entrepreneurs.

The problem with those bankers’ scales is that they require perfection. Both sides should be equally weighted to achieve balance. But when you have a vision of work-life balance, work-life balance becomes impossible.

Here’s What Achievable Work-Life Balance Really Is: #1: Intentional Imbalance (Deliberately Overwhelming)

My balance is never a perfect 50/50, but it is on purpose. Some weeks I work a ton of hours and other weeks I lighten my workload. Sometimes I take a Friday off for an adventure and sometimes I work on the weekend.

The important part is that I choose how I spend my time and energy. never worked with me. I am deliberate in how I balance my time and energy.

#2: All In!

The best work-life balance has nothing to do with the hours spent, it is about being in the moment.

If I’m “all in” and fully focused on the task at hand, I’m single-tasking instead of multitasking. It allows my mind to be present with the task. It gives me a relaxed energy rather than a frantic feeling.

When I spend quality time with my family (not worrying about work and checking my phone, just being in the moment with my favorite people), the amount of time is less important. It’s about quality – being fully present.

When you intentionally build balance and the skills to be “all in,” work-life balance becomes attainable instead of impossible perfection.
