What is there to know about Henri Goudreau?

Goudreau has definitely ‘been there and done it’ and knows the feeling of being in over one’s head all too well. In fact, he even struggled with things until he learned to commit himself to figuring out his personal and professional growth points that he needed to hit to build his construction business.

“I was born in the construction business,” he said. “My dad had an accounting degree and, like all kids in contractors, I got to spend the summers working in the field. My hands got dirty, but my dream continued to grow.”

He decided in high school what he really wanted to do with his life and narrowed down his list of hopes and dreams to three seemingly-achievable goals. He wanted to own a construction business, find success and retire by the age of 35. With seemingly no guidance and no ready roadmap to success, he began his journey.

“In the 1960s, there were really no construction management courses. You had to take civil engineering, which was the closest thing you could get,” he said. “I chose to focus on becoming a successful contractor, so I Opted for engineering and business.”

Goudreau also worked on highway, bridge and waterway design for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, while continuing to get his feet wet for industry. A few years later he decided to enter the private sector. He became a project engineer on the $10 million federal highway project, and was later hired at a nuclear power plant as a field engineer.

It was when he was offered a position as a project superintendent at a sewage treatment plant in Saudi Arabia, where he realized he had the skills for leadership and entrepreneurship. During a year in this position, he was able to save enough money to start his own company and so he moved back to the United States.

“I was 27 when I returned with about $25,000 in my savings account,” Goudreau said. “I had very little money, a pickup truck and a business card.”

His first six months were definitely a struggle and at times he felt like going back to the private sector, but he could not overcome the entrepreneurial itch. After connecting with a surety bonding professional, they were told they needed to prove themselves in order to get the money they needed. However, six months later, and nearing bankruptcy, he was told he would not get it.

“That moment was really the starting point of my career,” Goudreau said. “I left my office with the determination to make this work. I went into a business I had never been into before and ended up as an office renovator.”

You guessed it, another six months later, he found a new job and made over $200,000 in net profit, allowing him to secure the surety bond he needed to grow his business.

“I worked long, hard hours. Got up early, worked all day and spent my nights guessing and doing calculations,” he recalled. “I wore many hats. It was then that I came to the conclusion that I still haven’t built my business, but only a job. I had to ask myself a powerful question, and that was ‘What would it take to make this work?’ And that was also when I remembered what my dad used to say to me, ‘You don’t make your money with your construction skills, you make your money with your business skills.'”

This put Goudreau on a journey to develop a working model for growing a business. In 1991, he sold his construction business and spent time away from the business to consider his next steps. After earning such a huge profit from sales, he realized his model worked as he developed the work and felt the need to share his successes with others, to help them too.

At his own expense, Goudreau sought out experts to mentor and learned how to acquire skills in public speaking and coaching. This training lasted for two years. Fast forward to today, he has spoken at major events such as Associated General Contractors (AGC), National Glass Association, Associated Builders and Contractors (AGC), just to name a few. Additionally, he has authored several e-books, as well as training manuals, and has even sat on the national board of directors for NARI, the national association of the remodeling industry.
