From March 2022, Hertnagel returned to his native Germany to lead the business.

The business that McDonnell will now be in charge of has more than 880 stores and 26,000 employees in England, Scotland and Wales.

The incoming boss said: “I have worked at Lidl GB for over six years now, during which time we have seen a rapid increase in our store estate, affiliates and customer numbers. We are in a better place as a business Couldn’t be there and I’ve had the privilege of leading me from here.”
