Michigan woman arrested near Capitol had loaded shotgun, and she wanted to talk about Jan. 6, police say

  • U.S. Capitol Police said they arrested a Michigan woman on multiple gun charges when she went to Washington and told officers she wanted to talk about the January 6 Capitol riots.
  • Police said in a press release that Kerry Lynn McAtee, a 58-year-old woman, had a loaded shotgun and an unloaded .22 caliber rifle in her 2001 Chevrolet Silverado.
  • Police currently have no evidence that McAttee came to Capital Planning to do “anything other than talk to our officers,” the press release said.

US Capitol police said Thursday that they arrested a Michigan woman on multiple gun charges after she went to Washington and told officers she wanted to talk about the January 6 Capitol riots.

Kerry Lynn McAtee, a 58-year-old woman, had a loaded shotgun and an unloaded .22 caliber rifle in her 2001 Chevrolet Silverado when she parked it in the “no parking” zone in front of US Capitol Police Headquarters on Wednesday afternoon. Police said in a press release, Headquarters is a little over half a mile from the US Capitol.

“McAtee told our officers that she came here from Michigan and wanted to talk about the information as of January 6, 2021,” the press release said.

“During that conversation, one of our agents saw a gun case and a long gun butt in the Silverado,” the release said. “MacAT confirmed that his vehicle was firearms.”

Police said that both of them recovered from a loaded Mosbong .410 caliber shotgun and a Gamo Palat Gun, Remington Nylon 66.22 caliber rifle and a Connecticut Valley Arms .50 caliber muzzle loader was recovered.

Police currently have no evidence that McAttee came to Capital Planning to do “anything other than talk to our officers,” the press release said.

He has been charged with illegal possession of arms, possession of unregistered ammunition, illegal possession and transportation of a semi-automatic rifle and unlawful possession of a firearm misdemeanor.
