New Manhattan U.S. Attorney Names Top Deputies

Damian Williams taps New York City investigation chief Margaret Garnett as his deputy and white-collar defense attorney Daniel Gittner as criminal prosecution chief

Mr Williams was sworn in as Manhattan US Attorney on Sunday. He is the former co-head of the office’s securities-fraud unit and the first black leader in the office’s history to have a reputation for discovering financial-crime and public-corruption cases.

In the Department of Investigation, Ms Garnett released a report last week that found Mayor Bill de Blasio misused her security detail and did not reimburse the city for security costs for her presidential campaign. Mr. de Blasio called the report naive.

His office worked with the US attorney’s office on the prosecution announced earlier this month of defendants accused of abusing New York City’s COVID-19 hotel-room isolation program.

Ms. Garnett previously held leadership roles in the New York State Attorney General’s office. He served in the US Attorney’s Office from 2005 to 2017.

Mr. Gittner served as an assistant US attorney from 1997 to 2005, serving as the head of the General Crimes Unit from 2003 to 2005. His clients include Rengan Rajaratnam, who was accused in 2013 of allegedly being involved in an insider-trading scheme. . The acquittal of Mr. Rajaratnam marked the first defeat for the Manhattan US Attorney’s office, followed by a half-decade focus on insider trading, led by Preet Bharara.
