The General Directorate for Health officially reported 3,773 new cases on Wednesday, with 681 in hospitals, 105 in intensive care units and 17 deaths. The number of hospitalized patients was the highest since September.

On 1 November, Portugal reported fewer than 500 new infections, 360 people hospitalised, 60 in intensive care and five deaths. Those numbers were the same as a month ago.

The increase reflects a broader boom in Europe, with some countries severely tightening restrictions, but the government has said it does not see an urgent need for lockdowns.

Officials are considering whether to start immunizing children between the ages of 5 and 11.
