For the first time in 11 months, the average price of a liter of diesel has come down below 170 paise.
Figures from data company Experian show UK forecourts were charging an average of 169.9p per liter on Monday.
It is the first time the price has been cheaper by 170p since 9 March 2022.
The drop in price means the cost of filling up a typical 55-litre family car with diesel has fallen from a record high of £109 in June last year to £93.
Price should fall further
RAC Fuels spokesman Simon Williams said: “This is good news for drivers of diesel vehicles as they have had some tough times with the average price of a liter reaching almost £2 at the end of June.
“The price has since fallen 30p, a saving of over £16 on a full tank.
“But, if retailers play fair with the drivers, the price should drop further as the wholesale price is now back to the level that was seen when Russia invaded Ukraine.
“Even with retailers taking an average margin of 10 paise a liter higher, the diesel price should actually be reduced by 10 paise at 160 paise.”
