Robinhood says email addresses of 5 mln customers exposed in security breach

Nov 8 (Businesshala) – Robinhood Markets Inc (HOOD.O) said on Monday that a third party had gained access to the email addresses of nearly five million of its customers.

The fee-free broker said the full names of a separate group of nearly two million people were also exposed in the breach, while 310 people who had more personal information, including names, births, dates and zip codes, were compromised.

Robinhood said it believes no Social Security numbers, bank account numbers or debit card numbers were exposed and that no customers suffered any financial loss as a result of the November 3 incident.

“The unauthorized party socially engineered a customer support employee by phone and gained access to certain customer support systems,” the company said in a blog post. The third party had demanded extortionate payment.

The company’s shares fell nearly 3% in extended trading.
