Russia arrests top cybersecurity executive in treason case – court

MOSCOW, Sep 29 (Businesshala) – Russia has arrested Ilya Sachkov, the chief executive of top Russian cyber security company Group IB, on suspicion of state treason and will be held in custody for two months, a Moscow court said on Wednesday. said.

The company said Russian law enforcement officials searched Group IB’s Moscow offices on Tuesday. It did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the detention of its chief executive.

Group IB is one of the leading cyber security firms in Russia. It focuses on investigating high-tech crimes and online fraud with a global customer base that includes banks, energy companies, telecommunications firms and Interpol.

Sachkov’s lawyer could not be contacted for comment and it was not immediately clear to whom the charges against him pertain.

State treason can result in a prison sentence of up to 20 years. The details of such cases are rarely disclosed in full due to their classified nature.

Group IB said in a statement that searches at its offices began on Tuesday morning and law enforcement officers had left the same evening. It said it had no information as to why the searches were being conducted.

RTVI TV channel said Sachkov was detained on Tuesday, citing a law enforcement source. An RTVI correspondent also reported that the men were pulling luggage in a van parked outside the Group IB’s office.

Group IB said that all services are still running normally and the security of client data was ensured by the company’s geographically distributed infrastructure.

The company said it is working to clarify the situation.

In recent years a number of Russian scientists, soldiers and officials have been accused of treason, accused of sending sensitive material overseas.
