One of the many benefits of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is rental car insurance that applies to car rentals at almost any time. Collision damage waiver coverage purchased through rental car companies can cost around $30 per day. That means this one card perk could easily save Chase Sapphire Preferred card holders more than the card’s $95 annual fee.
However, cardholders need to know what is covered and what is not to avoid loss. Let’s take a look at how Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card rental car insurance works and the benefits and limits of coverage.
How to Get Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card Rental Car Insurance

First, you must use your Chase Sapphire Preferred® card to pay the total cost of the car rental. This may sound obvious, but it is important to note that this coverage is not automatic for simply being a cardholder.
When renting and picking up a car, you must decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver coverage or similar coverage options that cover damage to the rental car. If you purchase this insurance, your Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card coverage will not apply.
Finally, you should check the rental car for any prior damage before driving the rental car off the lot. Chase does not take responsibility for damages caused before you rent the vehicle or after you return it to the rental company.
What is covered by Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card Rental Car Insurance
If you meet all of the requirements – and avoid the exclusions below – you will automatically receive a collision damage exemption on your rental car. This coverage will reimburse you for any damage or theft to the vehicle while under your control. In addition, Chase will cover any “loss-of-use” fees, and administrative and towing fees levied by the rental company.
This coverage is primary. This means that you will not need to file with your personal auto insurance company first. Instead, if you need to file a claim, you can start with Chase’s benefits administrator. After providing all required documents, the Benefits Administrator will reimburse you for damages caused by theft or collision up to the actual cash value of the vehicle.
What is limited in coverage
The rental car coverage provided by the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card can help provide travelers with peace of mind when renting a car. However, there are several exclusions and limitations to note.
Coverage only shields the rental car
Perhaps the most important aspect to keep in mind about Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card rental car insurance is that it only covers physical damage to – or theft – of the rental vehicle.
No coverage is provided for injury to you, your passengers or anyone outside the car. Also, this coverage does not provide liability coverage for damage caused to other vehicles or property.
Before renting a car, check with your car insurance company to see if your individual coverage extends to rental cars. If not, we recommend purchasing additional coverage through your car insurance or car rental company.
Qualified Rental Agencies
Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card Rental Car Insurance only covers rentals from a commercial “Rental Agency” whose primary business is automobile rental. This means that peer-to-peer rentals – such as those through Turo – are not covered through the card’s insurance.
Similarly, hourly rentals, such as those through companies such as Zipcar, are excluded. Chase also does not explicitly include leases, mini leases and rental periods that exceed 31 days.
Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card car rental insurance also does not cover certain types of vehicles.
High value motor vehicles including Corvette, Ferrari, Jaguar and Porsche rentals.
Exotic and antique cars (defined as cars older than 20 years or cars not manufactured for 10 years or more).
Vehicles with open cargo beds.
Trucks other than pickup trucks.
Motorcycles, mopeds and motorbikes.
The passenger van has a seating capacity of more than nine people, including the driver.
If you want to rent a Tesla through Hertz, think twice before putting it on your Chase card. Tesla vehicles are expressly excluded from Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card rental car insurance.
Per Chase’s Guide to Benefits, rental car insurance provided by the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is available “in the United States and most foreign countries.” The Benefits Guide does not list any excluded countries.
When we called the benefits administrator, an agent confirmed that Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card rental car insurance is currently available in all countries.
How to File a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card Rental Car Insurance Claim
Like any type of insurance, you hope that you will never need to use the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver. But it’s still a good idea to know how to file a claim.
Chase Sapphire Preferred® card holders have two ways to initiate a rental car insurance claim: over the phone or online. To file a claim over the phone, start by calling 888-320-9961. If you are outside the US, you can call Collect at 804-673-1691.
But, you may find it easier to start the process online. To start your claim process online, browse the Acclaims site and enter your card number and name to get started.
Deadline to file a rental car insurance claim
Cardholders need to initiate the claims process within 100 days of the damage or theft. Once you do, the benefits administrator will send you a claim form. You must fill it out and submit it within 120 days of the date of loss or theft. Finally, Chase requires that you submit all necessary supporting documentation within 365 days of the damage or theft.
Rental Car Insurance with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Rewritten
One of the biggest benefits of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is the complimentary Auto Collision Damage Waiver whenever you rent an eligible vehicle. This coverage will cover almost all car rentals from traditional car rental companies — but does not cover rentals through car-sharing services like Turo.
If you’re renting a luxury car, be wary of exclusions on high-priced and foreign brands. Also, remember that this coverage only protects the rental car against damage or theft. You will need separate liability coverage for medical expenses or damage to the property of others.
