Three men in custody after overnight shooting in what police chief described as ‘helling’ scene
Police said in a news release that officers responded to several 911 calls for help from inside the crowded bar at 12:15 a.m. Sunday. He found what he called a chaotic scene with 14 wounded people and a 20-year-old woman who had been killed. Police said officers secured the scene and assisted the victims with the help of Good Samaritans until it was deemed safe to enter St. Paul’s fire medics’ bar.
Police said all the injured are expected to survive.
Preliminary investigations indicate that more than one person opened fire, but police said they did not know a motive.
“My heart breaks for the woman killed, her loved ones and everyone else,” said St Paul’s Chief of Police Todd Axtell, who vowed to bring justice to those responsible. “In an instant, he found himself in a hellish situation.”
Police said it was the 32nd murder in St Paul this year. According to city figures, there were 35 murders in St Paul in 2020, one of which was justified.
According to a recent Federal Bureau of Investigation report, murders in the US increased by 30% last year. Crimes in major cities have dropped somewhat this year, but are still above pre-pandemic levels.
Criminals and politicians have debated the source of the increase. Some have cited factors including the tension of the pandemic, growing mistrust of police within the black community in the wake of police shootings, and police backlash in some cities.
