Tableau plays a big role in helping users gain insights quickly while telling impactful stories using their data. That means organizations like mine are constantly looking at how they can quickly on-board their users in Tableau so they too can harness the power of rich analytics to make faster and more informed decisions. To do this successfully, and on a larger scale, many people have turned to hosting their own Wiz Games! Inspired by the wildly popular Iron Wiz competition from Tableau Conference, Wiz Games are an exciting and fun way for any organization to take their skills to the next level while expanding engagement on data culture and data analysis.

Recently, I witnessed Salesforce’s first Dreamforce Wiz Games, where members of the Tableau DataFam competed to build dashboards to find opportunities in the areas of sustainability, equality, and innovation. It presented data in a fun way to a broad Salesforce audience — some of whom don’t have data front and center in their day-to-day. Iron Wiz business owner Danika Harrod shared, “Games like this and Iron Wiz were created for everyone, whether you are competing and trying to show off your skills or just watching the spectacle. Everyone can appreciate how data has the power to tell interesting and unique stories that you would never see without looking.

Inspired by data viz competitions and their impact, I worked with Jabar Digital Service (JDS) to launch my own viz games, called the Jabar Dataviz Competition, as part of the Jabar Data Visualization Festival (JDVF) , which was open to all local Indonesian professionals. , government officials and students. Using the theme of “Think Globally, Act Locally”, the competition aimed to showcase the power of data visualization and storytelling. All views were published on Tableau Public. With my experience as Tableau Ambassador, my role was to advise the organizers as they brought the competition to life. We had thousands of people jumping online to learn tableau before the event and over 200 submissions for the competition!

Here I share my top 5 tips and learnings so you too can run your own version of Viz Games to elevate your community in a fun and engaging way.

1. Get Executive Stakeholder Sponsorship

You need leaders and executives to buy into the vision in order to get the maximum impact from your Vis Games. If you don’t, not only do you risk low participation but cross-functional collaboration will be difficult to achieve. The key to obtaining executive sponsorship is to communicate clearly:

2. Arrange Workshops

One Wiz Games is designed to upskill everyone so all of its participants are equipped with the same fundamental knowledge on data and Tableau or your analytics tool of choice. If you’re just getting started, we recommend that you check out these free “getting started” resources based on your role. The Tableau community is also a one stop destination for fellow users to learn tips and tricks and much more. Use this “How to Get Started with Tableau Community” as a stepping stone to dive right in.

At the JDVF Competition, we hosted a series of workshops. It was important to consider that everyone learns differently and at their own pace so learning opportunities were available both in person and digitally. The digital content was made publicly accessible through the Jabber Digital Services YouTube channel. Individually, the same material was distributed at Jawara Data Camp. Topics that were covered:

My proficiency in Tableau was already established but I knew others who were at different levels of Tableau. Starting the competition with the basics and then sharing resources on how people can continue their education on their own means everyone started at the same starting line.

3. Use Related Data Sets

A great way to generate excitement is for participants to choose a dataset they are familiar with. But if you are wondering which data set should I choose? Andy Cotgrave, Tableau’s senior technical evangelist suggests that one advantage competition organizers have is using their own organisation’s data, which sometimes reveals previously hidden opportunities.

In the Jabar DataWiz Competition 2022, participants were tasked with using data on the environment of West Java province, which was readily available in Open Data Jabar. Because of this, a variety of ideas and perspectives emerged on various social, economic, infrastructure, poverty, population, health, environment, tourism and culture, government and education issues, which the West Java Provincial Government aims to use in the future. 4. Exciting prizes and winning categories

Even if you do everything right in the lead up to your wiz games, it can be challenging to get participants unless you have interesting prizes. This helps attract participants who would not normally be interested.

I found that having prizes helped create a sense of competition and motivate participants to put in maximum effort to win. The total prize awarded in the Jabar Dataviz Competition 2022 was 75++ million (IDR), which included cash, book, credit for cloud service, and an award certificate from the West Java Provincial Government, given at the JDVF awards night Was. 5. Display the Wizz and the Winners

The visualization of Viz Games through the Showcase and highlighting of the winners shows stakeholders and participants the value of the work and the opportunity to express gratitude to everyone who contributed. At JDVF, the winners share their stories and what inspired them which they hope will inspire many others to continue their data journey.

Running Viz Games can feel like a big job but Data is a unique way for users to engage and upskill with the community.
