Saying goodbye to Joe Craven McGinty shares his thoughts on numbers and numeracy (and a quiz!)
By one measure—online page views—the columns that generated the greatest response in years were about 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, the body temperature historically considered normal, which researchers now say may be too high. ; Why COVID-19 Vaccines Don’t Last Long; the amount of sunscreen chemicals that accumulate in the body; And, poignantly, the research of a mathematician and a psychologist, who developed a mathematical model to find out what makes some marriages happy and others unhappy.
By another measure – the number of reader emails I received – the single most popular column was the one that revived a probability puzzle that demonstrated that even countless audience members can be stunned by math.
