U.K. Begins Review of Microsoft’s Planned Purchase of Nuance

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority has formally begun a review of Microsoft’s planned acquisition of Nuance Communications,
Voice technology company.

CMA said in a statement Deadline for its Phase 1 decision The merger is on March 9. Regulators will investigate whether the merger will reduce competition in the United Kingdom.

The deal, announced in April 2021, was expected to take place after receiving approval from regulators in the US and Australia. The European Commission unconditionally approved the deal at the end of December.

Microsoft (ticker: MSFT) nearly nine months ago offered to buy transcription-technology company Nuance (NUAN) for $56 a share. The enterprise value of the deal, including debt, was approximately $19.7 billion.

Nuance was trading 0.5% lower at $54.97 in premarket trading on Wednesday. The stock has gained 15% in the past year. Microsoft was trading at $316.22, up 0.4%.
