This figure is the second time the number of new daily cases has exceeded 1 million, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University, and is up from the 1.17 million recorded last Monday, the previous day’s record since the pandemic began.

As states do not report full data over the weekend, figures are often gloomy on Saturday and Sunday before jumping to Monday because of the backlog involved.

On average, more than 750,000 new cases have been reported every day in the US over the past week, almost triple the number of cases two weeks ago.
