BEIJING, Nov 10 (Businesshala) – China’s auto sales fell for the sixth straight month in October, down 9.4% from a year earlier, industry data showed on Wednesday, as a prolonged global shortage of semiconductors disrupts production .

Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) showed that the world’s largest car market had total sales of 2.33 million vehicles in October.

This time of year, known as “Golden September, Silver October”, is usually a high point of sale for the industry, with consumers making purchases after being away from showrooms during the summer months.

A bright spot in the data was strong sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs), which rose 135% to 383,000 units in October, thanks to the government’s promotion of green vehicles to cut pollution. These include battery-powered electric vehicles, plug-in petrol-electric hybrids and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

Tesla Inc. sold 54,391 vehicles manufactured in China in October, down slightly from 56,006 last month, when it posted its highest monthly sales in China since it began production in Shanghai nearly two years ago, according to export data. According to, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) released on Monday.

CAAM official Chen Shihua said chip supplies are declining in the fourth quarter, which is helping the country’s auto production grow slowly.
