WASHINGTON, Oct 14 (Businesshala) – Verizon Communications Inc. (VZN) said on Thursday that most of its US employees must show proof of vaccination against COVID-19 under President Joe Biden’s federal contractor executive order.
Verizon said the executive order required thousands of non-union US employees to be fully vaccinated by December 8.
Verizon, a federal contractor, it said Was discussing vaccination requirements for 30,000 American union workers with their unions.
The company said retail employees and some other employees should be vaccinated by February 1. Contractors, vendors, visitors and new employees entering Verizon US facilities must be fully vaccinated by January 1.
The majority of Verizon’s 130,000 employees worldwide are in the United States. The vaccine mandate will apply to nearly all of its non-federal employees.
Some “home-based” Verizon consumer groups and others are excluded, the telecom company said.
“While we respect that there are people within our workforce with different beliefs and perspectives related to COVID-19 and the vaccine, we must comply with government requirements, including from federal contractors,” Verizon said.
An increasing number of federal contractors are complying with the December 8 deadline.
Top US railroad operator Union Pacific Corp (UNP.N) said on Wednesday it would need to vaccinate its 31,000 US workers.
Last month, US passenger railroad Amtrak said it would require nearly all of its 18,000 employees to be fully vaccinated by November 22.
Boeing Company (BA.N), another federal contractor, said on Tuesday it would require COVID-19 vaccinations for its 125,000 US employees.
Major US airlines have also said they will meet deadlines imposed on federal contractors including American Airlines (AAL.O), Southwest Airlines Company (LUV.N), JetBlue Airways Corp (JBLU.O) and Alaska Airlines , as in the plane. Parts manufacturer Spirit Aerosystems (SPR.N).
The White House last month announced a December 8 deadline for employees of federal contractors, as Businesshala reported. The requirement is expected to cover lakhs of workers.
International Business Machines Corp and Raytheon Technologies Corp have also said they will require all US employees to be vaccinated.
