It may be pulling Juneteenth-themed ice cream from its shelves after facing a lot of backlash.
The retail giant described the Celebration Edition Juneteenth Ice Cream as a “curved red velvet and cheesecake flavored” treat as part of its Great Value line. The product’s label said: “Share and celebrate African-American culture, liberation and enduring hope.”
Ice cream isn’t the only Juneteenth-themed item Walmart is offering. other products From T-shirts to bottled water.
Juneteenth – June 19 – is the day that commemorates the end of slavery in America. It became a federal holiday in 2021 and is scheduled to be celebrated on June 20 this year, as June 19 falls on a Sunday.

Walmart did not immediately respond to MarketWatch’s request for comment.
The reaction on social media to the rollout of ice cream, especially from the black community, showed that many thought Walmart was essentially shortening the holiday by commercializing it.
Others also pointed to the fact that creamalicious, a black-owned ice cream brand, already has a Red Velvet-Cheesecake offering. He suggested that Walmart was copying the flavor concept, when the company could have opted to sell creamier ice cream instead.
Marketwatch also contacted Creamalicious for comment, but did not receive an immediate response.
