What’s new at the Disney parks—and some ways to save money when you go

The holidays are early for Disney DIS,
The Nerd Company recently unveiled new shows, attractions, hotels and restaurants coming to its theme parks around the world during its Destination D23 event in Florida.

While not a comprehensive list of all the news Disney dropped, here are some of the most exciting changes, broken down by location.

Walt Disney World Resort, Florida

Guardians of the Galaxy ride slated for 2022 (Epcot)

The new “Guardians of the Galaxy” roller coaster for the Epcot theme park has a clear opening deadline: summer 2022. Dubbed Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, it will include the first reverse launch on any Disney coaster and will be one of the world’s longest fully enclosed coasters.

Glenn Close, who appeared in the 2014 film as Zander’s Nova Corps leader, Nova Prime, will be reprising his role along for the ride.

New and Improved Shows (All Parks)

Many Disney theme park shows have been put on hold or canceled due to the pandemic. Later this week, Disney announced that many would be back with updates.

Redesigned entryway and neighborhood spruce (Epcot)

And that’s not all for Epcot. The park’s front entryway, anchored by a geodesic area that houses Spaceship Earth rides, is being redesigned as an area called Dreamers Point. The area will offer views of the park and a statue of Walt Disney.

During the 2019 D23 Expo, which was a similar event held in Anaheim, Calif., Disney announced that Epcot’s Future World area would be divided into three neighborhoods: World Festival, World Nature, and World Discovery.

These neighborhoods opened in October, but Disney announced this weekend that they’re getting refreshed, too. For example, a new quick-service restaurant called Connection Cafe & Eatery is coming to the World Fest zone.

Disneyland Resort, California

Downtown Disney District Glow Up

After the 2021 holiday shopping season ends, Disney’s two California theme parks, the shopping area adjacent to the Downtown Disney District, will receive a significant renovation.

The former AMC 12 theaters, which closed in 2018, will transform Disney into a “lifestyle” space. Designed with Southern California mid-century modern architecture, the area will include an open lawn, multicultural design elements, and more dining and shopping.

Toontown Renovation (Disneyland)

Inside Disneyland, a change is taking place in Mickey’s neighborhood. The entryway to Mickey’s Toontown is set to reopen in early 2023 as Centennial Park, an open space with an interactive fountain area and a tree with sculpted roots for children to play in.

Disney’s International Theme Parks and Cruise Line

Disney Wish Entertainment and First Sale (Cruise)

The previously announced new Disney cruise ship, the Disney Wish, will sail on its maiden voyage on June 9, 2022, featuring a Star Wars-themed bar, a 760-foot water ride called AquaMouse, and “Frozen”-themed theatrical food . Experience including Nordic-inspired cuisine.

Disney announced two new stage shows to cruise the ship. One show is a modern adaptation of “The Little Mermaid”, while the other – titled “See the Adventure” – will primarily star Goofy and Captain Minnie, along with a few other characters.

Avengers Campus Opening (Disneyland Paris)

It is already known that a Marvel-themed area will be coming to Walt Disney Studios Park in Disneyland Paris. With construction well underway, the Avengers campus has a clear opening deadline: summer 2022. It will coincide with the 30th anniversary of Disneyland Paris.

Disneyland Paris is leaning into Marvel’s addition, launching earlier this year Disney’s Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel as the world’s first official hotel dedicated to Marvel. That hotel is basically a sweeping redesign of Disney’s Hotel New York.
