Creating a dial of such complexity was a formidable technical challenge. The first step in the long and delicate process is to finish the right half of the blank dial in a silver-white color, then add black chronograph counters while protecting the rest of the dial with a transparent lacquer coating.

The white half, accordingly, must also be preserved, while the left half is painted black. The challenge is in ensuring a sharp boundary between the two without any color bleeding.

A third gray color is applied to the counter on the left, adding another level of complexity. Each color application must be completed with clear definition, and with each step, the likelihood of a blemish increases. This painstaking process has to be completely executed a total of 250 times for each piece in the chain.

The striking dial is proportioned to the famous 1969 Zenith A384 in a 37mm steel tonneau-shaped case. That vintage piece inspired a watch depicted on the wrist of Daisuke Jigen, the debonair right-hand man and best friend of title character Arsene Lupine III, in the first episode of the animated series. Lupine III in 1971. The Fantasy design was produced with a black, gray and gilt dial on which Zenith designed its first Lupine the Third Edition.

For the second Lupine edition, Zenith took aesthetic cues from another watch featured in the final episode of the first series in 1972, which depicts Zigen wearing a more fictional Zenith chronograph with a different panda dial.

The sapphire crystal case back is engraved with Daisuke Jigen’s likeness and provides a power reserve of 50 hours, beating Zenith’s El Primero 400 automatic integrated chronograph movement at a frequency of 36,000 mph.
